Wicked

Wicked (2024)

When I discovered that Wicked would be divided into two parts, I had a strong inclination to dislike it solely for this reason. However, I found it incredibly challenging to harbour hatred for this film and, in fact, I found it to be an exceptionally well-crafted adaptation of the stage musical I first witnessed nearly 15 years ago (and again since then).

One refreshing aspect of this movie musical was the selection of its cast based on their singing prowess rather than their fame. I found myself thoroughly enjoying every moment when someone opened their mouth to sing (unlike Les Misérables). While the film had a long overall runtime, time never felt like it dragged on, and all the songs that should have been included were (looking at you, Into the Woods).

I had read some comments beforehand about the washed-out colour palette before watching the film, but in the end, it did not affect my overall experience, and I can appreciate the director’s choices. Additionally, it was gratifying to witness numerous practical sets instead of gaudy CGI, although I am against the current trend of relying heavily on the ‘no CG’ marketing fad.

In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed this adaptation and eagerly anticipate the release of part 2 next year.
