The quotes in the title are crucial, as translating this book into a film would be impossible without some interpretation. While I understand how some people view the film as blasphemous, I can also see how you might think it’s a fair adaptation and certainly not as bad as others. The film boasts striking visuals, lots of contrast, and good soundscapes. Interestingly, only the first half of the book is covered, and I think this is understandable given the complex web of characters that has always been difficult for me to follow. Some of the sets and costumes also caused confusion. It’s been a while since I’ve been in such a large cinema with so many people and experienced such strong silence, and I’m pretty sure I heard crying at the end. While it had the potential to be great, it fell a bit short but still remains good in my eyes.
